Hasbro denied sales injunction in ‘Transformer Prime’ riff with Asus

Hasbro denied sales injunction in 'Transformer Prime' riff with AsusIn December, Hasbro sued Asus over the Transformer Prime name used in the company’s new flagship tablet.

The toy company was seeking an injunction on the tablet due to brand copyright violations. Transformers Prime is an animated TV series that launched in 2010, a new generation of the popular TV series from the 80s.

As of this week, the case has been thrown out, with a judge not agreeing with Hasbro’s claims: “There is nothing gimmicky about the Eee Pad Transformer or the Eee Pad Transformer Prime, nor can it be said that there is any similarity in the use or function between Hasbro and Asus’s products.”

Asus seems to have won the case because their device does indeed “transform” from a tablet to a laptop when adding the optional dock.

Hasbro responded: “Hasbro strongly disagrees with the Court’s decision not to preliminarily enjoin Asus’ use of those marks, however we were pleased with the Court’s views on the strength of Hasbro’s TRANSFORMERS and TRANSFORMERS PRIME marks. While the case proceeds toward trial, Hasbro will continue to actively pursue this matter and will take all steps necessary to protect its globally recognized and established marks.”

Perhaps most shockingly was the amount of tablets sold, which Asus admitted to during the trial and is extremely low given the lack of supply in retailers: “As of February 24, 2012, it had received over 2,000 pre-orders..and that retailer fulfillment orders for the next two months total approximately 80,000 tablet computers,” said Asus.

Hands-on with the ZTE Fury

ZTE Fury

We have seen our fair share of low- to mid-range devices release over the past year, and it takes quite a bit for one of them to stick out now-a-days. While ZTE may not be a huge name in Android world right now, they are certainly not taking a back seat in this battle at all. Recently ZTE announced the ZTE Fury for the Sprint network, and the device is priced and spec’d for a low to mid range device, but is it really worth skimping out on a few dollars at the time of signing that new contract, and getting a device like this?

France: It is now illegal to visit terrorist Web sites

France: It is now illegal to visit terrorist Web sitesFrench President Nicolas Sarkozy has made it illegal for French citizens to visit Web sites that encourage terrorism or hate crimes.

The move comes after the psychotic al-Qaeda-affiliated Mohamed Merah killed Jewish children and French soldiers before dying in a firefight with police officers.

Says Sarkozy: “From now on, any person who habitually consults Web sites that advocate terrorism or that call for hatred and violence will be criminally punished. France will not tolerate forced recruitment or ideological indoctrination on its soil.”

The EFF believes Sarkozy has gone too far, saying: “There’s no guarantee that criminalizing access to hate speech or terrorist content will end the very real problems of hate crime and terrorism. Extremist violence didn’t start with the Internet and it won’t end with it, either.”

Sarkozy is no stranger to censorship, either. Last month he was caught censoring Twitter users who were critical of him or his administration.

Pew: Teen texting up, voice calling down

Pew: Teen texting up, voice calling downAccording to a new report from the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, teens are texting more and calling less, following a decade long trend.

The report says the “volume of texting among teens has risen from 50 texts a day in 2009 to 60 texts for the median teen text user” in 2011, while 75 percent of teens with phones actively text.

In its “Teens, Smartphones and Texting,” annual report, Pew also confirms that older teens (14-17 year-olds) saw the biggest increase, from a median of 60 per day in 2009 to 100 in 2011. Older girls are the “most enthusiastic” tweeters, steady at a bit over 100 texts per day in 2011.

Boys of the same age average 50 per day.

Although 63 percent of teens text each day, only 39 percent use their phones for voice calling daily. Only 14 percent on teens use a landline to make calls.

Another trend is the growing amount of smartphones amongst teens, up to 31 percent.

Transformer Prime

You might have heard we were having a little contest of sorts, where we got together with NVIDIA and gave away not one, not two, but three ASUS Transformer Prime tablets, complete with the keyboard docks. We picked out the three winners, and here they are:

Congrats winners! Be sure to keep an eye on your inboxes for information, and be sure to try Shadowgun on that sweet, sweet piece of equipment heading your way.

Response was overwhelming, partly because everyone involved is so freaking awesome, and partly because the Transformer Prime is a really cool piece of Tegra 3 4-PLUS-1 quad-core-powered monster Android technology. Now let's all congratulate the winners, and be on the lookout for more contests and fabulous prizes coming from Android Central.

International Galaxy S II ICS source code now available

Galaxy S II

Following last week's Ice Cream Sandwich update release for the international Samsung Galaxy S II, the kernel source code (along with other open-source odds and ends) for the new firmware has been released online. Android's Linux kernel lies at the heart of the OS, and kernel source code for Android devices must be released by manufacturers under the GNU General Public License.

While the code won't be of any use to your average Galaxy S II owner, custom firmware developers will welcome its release, as it'll assist them with the development of ICS ROMs for the device. That in turn makes for better custom ROMs, which is good news for everyone.

To grab the code for yourself, head to the source link and type "i9100" in the search box.
